Independent Brief

Start of Survey Sharing

Responses from survey made me look in a different perspective that maybe the gender gap is based on different factors more than just unfair pay for work of equal value.

Change in Direction

  • Malaysia is under (ILO) Equal Remuneration Convention which makes it punishable by law for women to be paid less for work of equal value.

  • Irene Xavier from The Star Malaysia explained what is meant by work of equal value and how women tend to take work that are more said to be more convenient to women but are of less value.

  • Research from International Journal of Social Science and Humanity shows that Malaysian women and men both prefer flexible working hours to have work life balance.

  • Men prefer it because it help resolve commuting time, however women prefer it due to family responsibilities.

  • Amy Nelson founder and CEO of The Riveter, talked about how she does not "do it all" and learnt how to reject the notion of guilt when she is doing how much she physically can while running her business and raising 3 children.

  • Some women have reduced their working hours more than men and some have pulled back from promotions and leadership roles. (WEF pg 43)

  • Stress level increase during pandemic.
