The Centennial Chroma Graph Data Spatialization and Computational Craft Article

The Centennial Chroma Graph Data Spatialization and Computational Craft is a very well executed merge of computer programmed data and architecture. It displays it’s data well and is in a very interesting structure. In the article it talked about how computer programs and codes were used to map the data and find the spacing needed so that the pencils will not coincide with each other. We are also going to have a class on coding for a website and this kind of inspires me to see if I can try to use this kind of method for my part 2. But well, I need to find my idea first.

Questionnaire

1. Based on the presentation and work from Part 1, what aspect of your work do you feel needs improvement?

My observation data could better display products that has plastic in a household to inform people better on how many plastics we use everyday

Because my survey was really opened ended I received a lot of useful data that had not been able to show in my infographic which I could try to show in my envisioned information piece

2. What are your initial ideas for the outcome of your envisioned information piece*? Some questions to help you:

a. What would you say is the ultimate purpose of your envisioned information piece? It might help to think about why you chose your topic in the first place.

I chose the topic because it was something that I was interested in and wanted to learn more to see if I could become like a designer that design for sustainability or something so basically it’s like I wanted to try to make a change.

But I think for my project I just wanted to educate people about new ways to stop pollution and kind of promote circular economy which is again something I am really interested in as I think it is really amazing to have something that degrade once it served it’s purpose.

b. What do you hope to achieve with the piece?

Maybe just educate or sensitize people about biodegradable stuffs. Or maybe add information that I was not able to display in my infographic or share some on the amazing practices people shared in my survey

c. How does the data from you research contributes to the design of the piece?

My secondary research on how to make bioplastic at home might help in making a physical infographic or something. Or the main focus of my infographic which was my observation graph could be something I could expand on and display products that has plastic in them better.

d. Please feel free to sketch out your initial ideas on a sketchbook.

* If needed, please refer to the Project brief and Module Induction (Week 1 Slides) of T&T Part 1 from last semester to refresh your memory on what is the Envisioned Information piece.

3. What design processes excite you and why? (e.g. Silk-screening, 3D

Modelling/Printing, Printmaking, AR/VR, Coding, Woodcarving, laser cutting, embroidery, Sculpture, Video editing, animation etc... These are just examples if you have others that is not listed here please feel free to put it down and elaborate.)

I’d like to learn 3D sculpting and a little bit of coding. VR seems challenging and scary but its definitely something I want to try depending on how easy it is to learn. VR and AR could be a more interactive way of displaying the data of my observation.

I like sculpting, like real sculpting which is something that I have space for doing in my envisioned piece and I found that I can make mouldable bioplastic at home with fruit waste like watermelon peel or orange peel.

4. What don’t you know but need to for your project?

a. What skills might you need to develop?

Coding and 3D sculpting skills if I am really going for the VR Idea

b. What other information might you need?

More information the products that uses plastic and how they uses plastic like for what part and stuffs.

c. How might you acquire these skills or requirements?

YouTube and Google
