Week 3

1000 Words About Someone

After tutorial with my lecturer I was asked to correct a few things which included

• the spacing of the whole article

• the amount of words of the article

• add his instagram and other social medias for people to view his work

• and lastly the colours of the background was too bright for the texts.

So I tried to shorten is twice, haha 😂😂. I wanted to keep most of the interview to it's original state. Then for the spacing I increased the gutters a bit and I used an overlay black colour behind the text to help ease the readability a bit.

And this is the final.

Everything About One Thing

For the EAOT, I made 2 mindmaps to get started, 1 about guitar because i like guitars and I found a few things that seems interesting to look into and I highlighted them. I also made a research framework to see areas where I can get the information.

The second one is about mushroom because I like eating mushroom so I thought why not. And i also know about mushroom being poison or used as drug and stuffs so I thought it might be interesting too. Again I highlighted the things that I found interesting to look into and made a research framework.

In the end I decided to go with the Guitar one as I was able to expand it more and it's a topic I already know a little bit about, so I think it will be easier for me know what to research and how to get information.

Photonovel

For the Photonovel, having to make a story about "an outsider"/ "misfits" (for example A watchmaker who does not wear a watch), I thought that it would be better to make the story like a comedy. My first idea was a sleeper that does not sleep and I created a few boards on miro on my research and on my ideas.

At this point, I had a blurry plot but I did not really like how things was going on. It felt forced and I could not give the story a moral as such which made me lost interest in it so I thought of other ideas I could make.

Then when checking my savings and looking if I went over my budget limit for this month, that made me wonder why not try to explore greed. The idea then came up what if a person with a high paid job would live on my budget and stick to it, how much rich will he become

So I made a few research on greed and here's what I found.

As for he story I was in a total blank so I went to look at some folklore stories to get a better idea of what I could write.

After that I wrote down a few different possible endings and I wrote a few things about the main character.

After that I took some time and wrote down the story.

I decide there will be 2 characters

Richie: because he is rich

Manny: because he spend a lot of money

Main Character: Richie, a rich man who lives like a poor person because he is in competition with his colleague Manny. (Hoarder/Comparison)

Second Character: Manny, a man in the same department as Richie, gains as much money as him but is an over-spender and a show-off. Therefore, he has a lot of depts, nobody knows this, and he is also known to have a very beautiful wife and everybody at work envy him. (Overspender/Entitlement `in the end when he says he deserved the position`)

Richie is rich, but he lives like a poor person because he competes with Manny, whom he despises because of how he shows off at work. He wants to be better than him and have a lot of money. Nobody knows that Richie is rich at work because of all the cheap stuff he has.

Manny, on the other hand, is the exact opposite of Richie. He has the same post as him and gain as much money as him but is an overspender. He spends money on unnecessary expensive products and shows them off at work. He is also known to have a very beautiful wife, and everybody envies him for how good his life seems.

​At work, Richie’s friends talk to him about marrying. But Richie being such a freak about sharing his money with someone else always says no and that he is not ready. His friends usually think that maybe he has many debts and financial problems based on how cheap he is and why he does not want to marry.

​After work, Richie goes out to buys some necessities. He usually exaggerates over prices of high-quality products and prefers to buy cheap products regardless of whether they may break easily.

​When he passes near beggars, he is paranoid to give them money because he thinks they may use his money wrongly to buy drugs or alcohol.

At home, he does his own plumbing and electrical work as he does not want to pay a plumber or an electrician for it. While doing his stuff he always calculates how many savings he is making.

​He also cooks his own food instead of buying it because it’s more expensive to buy food. While he cuts his vegetables, adds in spices, and serves his dish, he still thinks about how much savings he is making.

​The day of promotion finally came. And Manny, who was more expected to get the promotion, bought a new car and was showing it off on his phone.

​Being a fan of great cars, Richie got annoyed thinking that the car is being wasted in Manny’s hand because he hated him, and he got jealous.

Suddenly the director came out and said that Manny is fired. Everybody was shocked because he was one of their best employees. Manny got mad and started shouting that he deserved this position and he had been waiting for so long for it.

​Then the director replied that he had a huge debt that he did not repay to one of the company’s business partners, and that is why he is firing him. Everybody found out that he was not really rich and Richie out of all people was overjoyed.

Richie was also the next person suitable for the promotion, so he got it instead. He also realized that all this time he has been trying to compete against someone who was already broke, so he thought to himself “ah, maybe ill try enjoying rich life a bit from now on” while looking at his bank account from his phone which was over a million ringgit

​Manny on the other hand was in a very bad place having no job to repay his debts was leaving to get some fresh air. while leaving he got stopped by a woman who slapped him and scolded him.

It was his wife, she wanted to surprise him at his job because she also thought he will get the promotion but instead overheard a conversation of other employers talking about how Manny got kicked out of the company. She was furious knowing all the debts that they have, and Manny even bought a new car and she wanted a divorce.

She then turned around and saw Richie and his name tag and rushed to him “You, you are Richie, you got the new promotion I heard, why don’t you marry me, please, I need someone rich to take care of me.”

Richie looked at her, horrified, and thought to himself, "damn, she must be very high maintenance " (referring to how costly her makeup, hairstyle, and clothes look). But he realized how stupid it was competing with Manny when he has accumulated all this money and thought why not try rich life and married life also.

​He then replied yes and then looked at Manny and tell him, "hey I’m taking some debts off your shoulders, I'll marry your wife and also buy your car also, how is that?"

​All the other colleagues were shocked, start asking questions "how much money does Richie have, is he rich? Since when? he always wears and has poor stuff, well he does have a high paid post, but I always thought he was poor"

​So, Richie stopped being such a money hoarder, but at a certain point, because still years later he dies doing his own electrical work because he was too stubborn to pay an electrician.

The story also shows some of the `daughters of greed` like how the Richie got jealous of Manny thinking he was richer than him and he was also dissatisfied. He was also hard-hearted to give charity. Manny was lying about his wealth and somehow did a little bit of fraud by taking loans here and there and was not repaying them. He also resolve to violence and he was denied the promotion and got fired. It covered 5 out of 6 of the `daughters of greed`.

After that I discussed with my lecturer and he told me that the ending is a bit unclear and that it would be better to make Richie become a better person so now I'm working on changing the ending.
